The 18th release in Marvel's Cinematic Universe of superhero movies has earned $605 million in the USA and Canada, according to box office tracker Exhibitor Relations, and is the first film since "Avatar" (2009) to chalk up five consecutive top spots.

That's a mere $14 million (£9.9 million) away from The Last Jedi ($619.7 million / £441 million) and $18 million (£12.8 million) behind Marvel's biggest-grossing film to date, The Avengers ($623.3 million / £444 million).

While most films see a significant drop off after they're released, Black Panther has beaten the odds and continues to draw in support from fans, who've seen the film multiple times. Historic numbers all around and Black Panther isn't quite done. The film is also closing in on $1.2 billion at the worldwide box office. "Tomb Raider" will have to settle for second place, earning a rather weak $23.5 million in what should have been its strongest weekend, as CBR noted. The film based on the popular novel was right around expectations and I'm predicting a $30-$40 million domestic gross. That was good enough for third place, just ahead of Disney's A Wrinkle in Time, which, after bad reviews, lost more than half of its box office and made only $16.5 million domestically, good for about $61 million after ten days of release and fourth place. The film did eclipse $400 million domestically and is very close to passing Spider-Man as Sony's highest grossing release of all-time. Ryan Coogler's comic-book sensation on Sunday became the first film since James Cameron's 2009 smash film, "Avatar", to hold the No. 1 spot at the weekend box office for five straight weekends.

Rounding out the top tier are "Game Night" at No. 6 with $5.6 million, "Peter Rabbit" at No. 7 with $5.2 million, "Strangers: Prey at Night" at No. 8 with $4.8 million, "Red Sparrow" at No. 9 with $4.5 million and "Death Wish" at No. 10 with $3.4 million.
