  • Browns Trade DT Danny Shelton To Patriots

On Friday, the Browns pulled off deals with the Miami Dolphins for wide receiver Jarvis Landry, the Buffalo Bills for quarterback Tyrod Taylor and the Green Bay Packers for cornerback Damarious Randall.

The Cleveland Browns reportedly continued their flurry of roster moves Saturday by agreeing to trade defensive tackle Danny Shelton to the New England Patriots in exchange for a conditional draft pick. Last season, the defensive tackle notched 34 tackles in 16 games, contributing to the Browns improved run defense past year.

Shelton, 24, was selected 12th overall by the Browns in the 2015 NFL Draft.

According to Pro Football Focus, Shelton was ranked as the 35 best interior defender in the NFL last season. The Browns also have second-year tackle Trevon Coley (61% of the snaps), who started 15 games opposite Shelton, and 2017 sixth-round Caleb Brantley, who had two sacks and one fumble recovery despite playing only 20% of the snaps and starting one game. The Patriots can also pick up his fifth-year option for 2019, which would be a yet-to-be-determined salary of the average of the third through 25th highest salaries among defensive linemen.

The Shelton deal continues an active 24 hours for the Browns. At best, the Patriots just added a full-time starter. It also means that none of the Browns' first-round picks from 2009 to 2015 are still on the team.

Shelton, a 6-foot-2, 335-pound run stuffer, helps fortify a front that includes Malcom Brown, Lawrence Guy, Vincent Valentine and Adam Butler. And New England's defense was gashed for 164 yards on the ground in the Super Bowl LII loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
