  • 'Sex and the City' star Cynthia Nixon running for governor, will challenge Cuomo in primary

Cynthia Nixon, a progressive activist and actress best known for playing Miranda on HBO's "Sex and the City", announced Monday that she would challenge New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in a Democratic primary.

In 2004, Nixon accepted an Emmy award - the highest accolade in USA television - for her role as Miranda Hobbes from Trump, the fellow celebrity-turned-politician whose current presidency she publicly opposes.

Cynthia Nixon, speaking at the People's State of the Union at Townhall on January 29, 2018, in New York City, has announced that she will run for governor of New York as a Democrat.

"New York is where I was raised and where I'm raising my kids", she says in the video, focusing on schooling and wealth inequity. Our leadership is letting us down.

"Half the kids in our upstate cities live below the poverty line".

"Next stop Albany, " a voice says at the end of an online video her campaign released showing her riding aboard a train.

Cynthia Nixon has confirmed she's running for New York Governor as she gets her campaign off to a flying start. "We want our government to work again, on health care, mass incarceration and fixing our broken subway".

She will challenge Democratic incumbent Andrew Cuomo, who is reportedly hoping to run for president in 2020.

Nixon's looming candidacy has unnerved some supporters of Cuomo.

Nixon has always been critical of Cuomo, who she called a "centrist and Albany insider" in a statement on Monday.

"Something has to change", Nixon said in her campaign's launch video Monday.

Her announcement video emphasizes her long ties to the city and that she is a graduate of its public schools.

"Cynthia Nixon is far from a household name in NY", said Siena pollster Steven Greenberg.

The 60-year-old Cuomo had no immediate comment on Nixon's candidacy. Meanwhile, Kristin Davis (aka SATC's Charlotte York Goldenblatt) already tweeted her support of Nixon.

"I'm not nervous about whoever runs", Cuomo said last week.

"He also wants to increase the number of privately-run charter schools in New York City by more than 50 percent".

Nixon is aligned with New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, a Democrat who is politically to the left of Cuomo.

"Cynthia hasn't been bought and paid for by special interests and won't be accepting any corporate contributions in this campaign", the linked donation website reads.

Her message also echoes the outsider, progressive message other candidates have invoked this year.

Nixon has her work cut out for her.

Cuomo also faces two Republican challengers for governor, Deputy State Senate Majority Leader John DeFrancisco and Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro.
