  • Uber's self-driving Volvos have been banned from Arizona's public roadways

The manufacturer of the software running in the auto, and of radars and sensors used on self-driving cars, Aptiv said in a statement that its safety systems had been disabled on the vehicle that killed the pedestrian.

Uber has reportedly reached a settlement deal with the family of the victim that was killed by a self-driving auto in Arizona. That's what's made Arizona the Wild West for road-testing self-driving vehicles.

The crash has raised concerns about whether lives are put at risk by allowing companies to use public roads as testing ground for self-driving vehicle technology. Uber will reportedly be required to get a new permit and deal with any investigations surrounding the recent crash before continuing tests in the state according to the California DMV.

The human-driven auto, as its use expanded in the early 20th century, had a poor safety record that has markedly improved: In 1921, vehicle use resulted in 24 deaths for every 100 million miles traveled, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Last week, Boston's government asked self-driving companies operating in the city to halt operations while safety procedures are reviewed.

The decision Monday from a three-judge panel in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit found that although Uber's operations in Philadelphia were damaging for the taxi cab industry, they were a boon for cabs' customers.

Later in the day, the New York Times reported on the kind of safety and performance information Arizona doesn't require of driverless operators.

When Uber decided in 2016 to retire its fleet of self-driving Ford Fusion cars in favor of Volvo sport utility vehicles, it also chose to scale back on one notable piece of technology: the safety sensors used to detect objects in the road.

TuSimple is testing autonomous trucks out of a new facility on Tucson's southeast side and plans to send a commercial load using the self-driving technology from Tucson to Phoenix in the next few months.

At the end of the ride, all passengers are dropped off at the same spot, and Uber says they'll "need to follow the walking directions in the app for a short walk to your chosen destination". But given what we know of the accident - a pedestrian with a bike appearing close to the vehicle and low down - the combination of a blind spot and disabled radar software could explain why the auto failed to react.

Doug Ducey (R) and Uber reportedly kept the company's controversial self-driving vehicle tests a secret, according to The Guardian.

Uber has been testing autonomous cars in San Francisco - with permits - for a year.
