  • Flu season still going strong

Nationally, the CDC reported 17 flu deaths among children last week, bringing the total pediatric deaths to 114.

Public health officials announced five more flu-related deaths, and roughly 900 more lab-confirmed cases of the flu, signaling what officials called a slowdown to a flu season expected to last several more weeks. "We don't know. It's really hard to predict flu, but it could be a month and a half", Fry said.

Brown says because this flu season has been particularly bad, it may help spur changes and developments in making better flu vaccines. The latest data indicates 2,256 reported cases this season.

Four of the five deaths were recent, while one occurred during the first week in February.

"While we believe that flu season has peaked for us in DE, flu is still widespread and at high levels in our state, and will likely continue to circulate for weeks to come", said DPH Director Dr. Karyl Rattay in a written announcement of the deaths.

Meanwhile, officials say the number of confirmed flu cases appears to be leveling off.

It had been driven by a kind of flu that tends to put more people in the hospital and cause more deaths, and officials lately are seeing less of that. The restrictions, which prohibit children younger than 12 from visiting, remains in effect. Since October, 23,324 people have been hospitalized for influenza-associated complications.

In a statement, DPH Director Karyl Rattay said though her division believes the season has peaked, the flu will likely remain in the First State for a few more weeks.

Anyone interested in receiving a flu shot at no cost should contact the Garvin County Health Department at 405-238-7346, for clinic times and further information.
