  • Google Acquires Tenor GIF Platform, Will Still Operate as Separate Brand

The trend of mobile content consumption has been growing-and search engines such as Google are taking note.

Tenor mobile messaging services clubbed with the first GIF keyboard debuted on Apple's iOS operating system. Some cards are quite useful for specific searches. "Mobile-first indexing means that Google will use the mobile version of the page for indexing and ranking, to better help our - primarily mobile - users find what they're looking for", wrote Fan Zhang, Software Engineer at Google. This is what is going to change starting in July 2018.

To fix this issue, the company has begun experimenting with a "mobile-first" approach to indexing web pages. This was because desktop sites sometimes include elements that are missing on their mobile versions-if a mobile user clicks on a Google result expecting to see something that then doesn't show up, it's frustrating. Google has informed that it will notify the site owners via messages about their sites being migrated to mobile-first indexing process. One such measure is that slow-loading content will now be downranked. Tenor sees itself as a search business that's central to mobile messaging, the company's Chief Business Officer Jason Krebs told Marketing Dive earlier this year.

Google has made another big step in its shift towards mobile, by starting to link to the small-screen rather than desktop versions of many websites.

When we started Google Images, we focused on making it easy to find photos and images from across the web. Google has added other content to its results pages as well, such as a Google Image results widget, and other widgets that aren't always relevant.

Whether or not Google will more prominently feature GIF searching isn't clear.
