  • GoPro Hero brings it to the cheap action cam competition

So while it doesn't have all of the advanced features of the $399 Hero6 or the $299 Hero5, the new Hero does have many of them, making it an excellent budget choice for those eager to start playing with action cameras. It should also help GoPro keep pace with a number of newer competitors from around the world who sell similar cameras at or under the $199 price point.

"Hero is a great first GoPro for people looking to share experiences beyond what a phone can capture", said GoPro's Senior Vice President of Product, Meghan Laffey.

At only $199, the new HERO is easier than ever to get your hands on. A new camera has been added to the GoPro lineup that's simply called the Hero. Wherever life takes you, capture and share your story for the flawless price. There's a 2-inch touchscreen display, it's waterproof up to 10 metres so you can take it for a dip and has voice control so you don't have to reach for the button on the cam to take a photo or hit record.

The new GoPro Hero shoots HD video at 1440p and 1080p at 60 frames per second.

GoPro announces the entry level $199 HERO

The main differences between the Hero and its more expensive counterparts are mostly on the performance side. It also shoots 10-megapixel stills and has an electronic video stabilization system. GoPro says that this is a 10MP camera, which should be able to take some solid images. Since it is the same in its size and shape as the other two cameras, it can fit in the same mounts and should work with all the same accessories as well.

The GoPro camera is compatible with your smartphone and has an app to offload your photos and videos on the go.

It's no secret that GoPro has been struggling, and the introduction of the Hero looks like an effort to right that ship.
