  • After Matunga on CR, WR's Matunga Road station to have all women staff from March 8

After a railway station in Jaipur and the Maninagar Station in Gujarat deployed an all-women staff lately, the Indian Railways has come up with yet another impressive initiative in honour of women.

In his address during the International Women's Day celebrations at the Salem divisional office, Divisional Railway Manager Hari Shankar Verma said one of the railway schools within the jurisdiction of the division would also function as an All-Women Railway School. Another two stations, Phirangipuram in Guntur division and Ramavarapadu in Vijayawada division, will also employ only women by this month-end.

This is how Indian Railways, which employs 91,000 women, is carving out a new image of gender equality in its big operations.

On the occasion of International Women's Day on March 8, the railways board flagged off the Mumbai Central- Ahmedabad Shatabdi Express with women ticket checking staff on-board.

This would be the first time in East Central Railway's history that every post at a railway station would be taken over by women personnel.

Dr Atul Gupta, Divisional Railway Manager, Mysuru, A K Sinha, ADRM, Mysuru and Other officers and staff from Mysuru Division were part of the programme. Security of women passengers is heightened by deployment of Nirbhaya squads comprising lady ticket checkers and Railway Protection Force personnel in suburban trains in the city, he added. Helpdesk will be kept at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) on March 8 where women staff will be sitting and will help the commuters.
