An agreement between Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd and EDF, France, was signed to prescribe a way forward for the implementation of the 9900 MW Jaitapur nuclear power project at Madban village of Ratnagiri district in Maharashtra. "PM Narendra Modi welcomes President of France Emmanuel Macron at the Hyderabad House in New Delhi ahead of the bilateral talks", MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar tweeted along with pictures of the two leaders. Highlighting the need for a strategic partnership between the two countries, Macron said it was time for the two great democracies of the world to work even closer. The visiting French leader also presided over the signing of an important agreement that will allow mutual recognition of academic qualifications.

While India and France announced a slew of pacts and billions of dollars in trade deals to much fanfare on Saturday, Indo-French co-operation quietly took one small step towards a joint giant leap towards literally reaching for the stars. He also invited the researchers to visit France.

Earlier in the day, Mr Macron talked about his personal rapport with Mr Modi, which was established after their meeting in Paris a year ago. He was received at the airport last night by PM Modi, in a special gesture.

"You welcomed me in Paris past year with an open heart and a lot of warmth".

The India-France partnership will also help fight organized crime, trafficking, including in weapons of mass destruction, smuggling and illegal fishing; combating climate change and its consequences on security, particularly in terms of natural disasters; protection of the environment and natural resources, including tackling oil spills; and aid to victims of disasters.

Earlier in the day, Macron was given a ceremonial welcome this morning.

On Monday, he heads to the Hindu holy city of Varanasi on the banks of the river Ganges, which the Indian premier has promised to modernise and clean up.

Modi and Macron will hold a bilateral summit later on Saturday following which a number of agreements across multiple sectors are expected to be signed.

Both he and Mr Macron are often compared internationally due to their broadly similar political views, as well as youth and good looks.

And there were red faces when it emerged a former Sikh militant was invited to a dinner with him in Mumbai.
