  • 'Directorate S' traces Pakistan's role at the heart of the Afghanistan war

Kabul based TOLO News reported that America's senior diplomat for South and Central Asia said the U.S. was in Afghanistan at the request of its government and people would be stay there to make sure the country did not become a safe haven for terrorists again.

At the same time, the United States has stepped up battlefield pressure, notably through air strikes on the Taliban as Afghanistan's worldwide partners have sought to build up diplomatic support from neighboring countries to push the movement to the negotiating table.

He said tens of thousands of Afghans are killed and injured every year in confrontations between the Taliban and government forces.

The call follows President Ashraf Ghani's offer last month to hold peace talks with the Taliban and comes as worldwide powers have sought to build pressure on the movement to accept negotiations to end more than 16 years of war in Afghanistan.

"We are in Afghanistan as a guest of a sovereign Afghan government that's recognized by the United Nations and worldwide community, with our presence enshrined in the strategic partnership agreement and a bilateral security agreement".

Ms Wells ruled out a recent request from the Taliban for a direct talk with the White House unless it engages with the elected government of Afghanistan. The Afghan President Ashraf Ghani recently laid out some important principles about the implementation of the peace process at a conference in Kabul.

Tadamichi Yamamoto told the Security Council Thursday the Taliban's argument that it won't talk to the government because the conflict is not between Afghan parties "misrepresents the reality".

"But that does not imply that we would support or think that there's any manipulation of Afghanistan so that it can be used against Pakistan", Wells said in response to a question at the US Institute of Peace, a US-Congress supported top American think-tank.

A resurgent Taliban has been blamed for much of the increased violence in Afghanistan since United States and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation forces concluded combat missions in 2014.

Fighting to drive out worldwide forces and re-establish their version of strict Islamic law, the Taliban control or contest large areas of Afghanistan and inflict heavy casualties on government security forces.

Earlier, it was reported that the Foreign Secretaries of India and Pakistan might come face to face in the conference.
