Jump In Overdoses Shows Opioid Epidemic Has Worsened

  • Narcan also known as Naloxone is an opiate overdose antidote

The most recent report from the CDC's Enhanced State Opioid Overdose Surveillance (ESOOS) Program stated that, from July 2016 through September 2017, opioid overdoses have increased 35% in the program's 16 participating states. "We saw, sadly, that in every region, in every age group of adults, in both men and women, overdoses from opioids are increasing".

Substantial increases in overdoses were seen nationwide, said the report released by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But those increases varied dramatically from state to state, even within a region.

Emergency department visits jumped 35 percent for the 16 states where overdose visits were tracked by CDC researchers.

Despite efforts to address the crisis, opioid overdoses in the USA continue to increase at a disturbing rate.

The report found that urban centers saw a greater increase in overdose visits than rural areas, which have traditionally been seen as the hardest hit by the nation's opioid epidemic.

Significant increases in opioid overdoses were also seen across all five regions in the United States, with the Midwest showing the most dramatic increase (69.7%), followed by the West (40.3%), Northeast (21.3%), Southwest (20.2%) and Southeast (14%). She says states can use that information to identify where resources are needed. That would involve training hospital physicians to administer the first dose of medications that reduce patients' opioid withdrawal symptoms so that they aren't sent out into the city without any defense against the itch for their next fix.

The data reports that, from the same time frame as the ESOOS Program report, all 5 U.S. regions experienced increases in overdose rates.

Alert communities to rapid increases in overdoses seen in EDs and coordinate an informed and timely response. For public officials, the agency recommended increasing the distribution of naloxone, which reverses overdoses, and using prescription drug monitoring programs.

The "gold standard" to treat opioid addiction is medication-assisted treatment - such as Suboxone or methadone - combined with counseling.

The fact that the report was only able to capture people who were hospitalized suggests that the grim toll may be much higher, because many people who overdose never go to the ER.
