Lidl supermarket destroyed 'by looters' after snow storm

47-year-old John Kelly with an address of Allen Hall, Belgard Square in Tallaght was charged with handling stolen property, to which he made no reply.

Edgar Cesynas, 24, from Silkin Park Drive, Citywest and originally from Lithuania, was charged with theft.

Gardaí, the Irish police force, later confirmed that six people were arrested at this scene, with a further three arrested at another looting scene at a Centra Store in Jobstown, at which someone who cut open the shutters with a con saw.

The frantic and somewhat frightening scenes apparently occurred after 4pm this afternoon when a group of looters robbed a Lidl store in Foutunestown. Fine Gael TD Colm Brophy, said: "I utterly condemn this mindless criminal behaviour that has been carried out in recent hours".

"I am particularly mindful that these actions have taken place in the midst of a code red weather warning when our emergency services are at full stretch".

"Lidl is a much valued and appreciated employer in our community whose head office is on the Main Road in Tallaght".

Another councillor Cathal King said the local community was "absolutely fuming".

"This group of criminals put lives at risk tonight while destroying the livelihoods of the store's employees and in many cases their families reliant on that income".

Cops said the Fortunestown Lane store had sustained substantial damage along with another store in the city. It said it was not in a position to comment further.

The German supermarket have released a statement this morning saying that a serious incident had taken place, but no people were injured and the store had been closed at the time.
