  • Man shoots himself dead in front of White House

A man has reportedly shot and killed himself outside the White House in Washington.

.

The victim suffered a single gunshot wound, and Secret Service personnel did not fire any shots, Secret Service spokeswoman Cathy Milhoan said.

The incident is said to have affected traffic around the White House.

President Donald Trump is not at the White House, he's in Florida, but is set to return later Saturday.

Medical personnel were called to respond to the male victim, but he was declared dead at the scene, the U.S. Secret Service said.

The Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Police Department is the lead investigative organization for the shooting, supported by the Secret Service and other law enforcement agencies. "Our natural death squad is on the scene".

The man's name has not been released.

The White House was placed on lockdown, and the surrounding area was cordoned off.

He said he had the information confirmed to him by a US Secret Service Agent at around midday local time.

U.S. Secret Service responded to the sound of shots fired.

It is unclear if the incident was politically connected in nature, although CBS News security analyst Ron Hosko said that will be one thing law enforcement would look into as they investigate. Police do not believe any of those shots were being directed at the White House.
