Myerson leaves after 21 years, and nearly three years in what some have called the hardest job at Microsoft - trying to build a device business after the company exited the phone handset business, while charting the future of Windows in a world that is moving away from the client-computing model that it led.

Although this is a new milestone for the company, the operating system's market share is still short of Windows 7, and as usual, it credits the rise to PCs, tablets, phones, Xbox One consoles and Windows Mixed Reality headsets. More recently, Myerson supervised the launched of Windows 10, which represented a major transition for the Windows ecosystem. It will be headed by Rajesh Jha, the current executive vice president of Microsoft's Office Product Group.

The future of Windows is bright as we continue to innovate across new scenarios and device form factors, and more deeply connect to our Microsoft 365 offerings.

The shakeup brings with it many questions, about Microsoft's future and what impact this will have on Windows and its other service. Panos Panay becomes chief product officer and devices leader. The Windows and Devices Group is being split apart too. And Corporate VP Brad Anderson, whose team joined the Windows organization late previous year, will continue to run Windows Enterprise Deployment and Management. It will be responsible the development of Azure and the company's rapidly growing portfolio of artificial intelligence tools, a good portion of which are hosted on the cloud platform. Roanne Sones, who heads up technical engagement with OEMs and silicon vendors, will also be part of Zander's team. He will continue to work on the HoloLens while also leading a new team called AI Perception & Mixed Reality Services, which will be part of Guthrie's organization. The first is a new division that will focus on user experience and is set to operate under the name Experiences & Devices.

Outside of Windows and Devices, there are a few other noteworthy org changes revealed today, especially around AI. Alex and team will take guidance on all AI-related areas from Harry Shum and work very closely with AI + Research (AI+R).

I'm hearing from my contacts there are not going to be layoffs associated with today's reorg.

On Thursday, Nadella unveiled his latest overhaul of Microsoft's organizational structure with several key themes emerging from the changes.
