New Zealand dealt Taylor blow ahead of England decider

Bairstow's 104 off 60 deliveries, backed by 61 from fellow opener Alex Hales transformed the winner-takes-all showdown from an expected tight contest into a one-way event.

Hales, back in place of the injured Jason Roy for his first match of the series and since he announced his white-ball-only future, was no slouch either and passed 2,000 ODI runs for his trouble.

England were helped by the absence of New Zealand batsman Ross Taylor, who was ruled out with a thigh injury that he aggravated when he scored an unbeaten 181 in the five-wicket win in the fourth game on Wednesday.

Legspinner Adil Rashid (3-42) and Chris Woakes (3-32) spearheaded a disciplined all-round England bowling performance, Tom Curran (2-46), Moeen Ali and Mark Wood also contributing. Officially, a four and six from Ben Stokes saw England home by 108 balls.

Taylor hit a six off Woakes in the 48th over, then New Zealand reached the 49th over needing 13 from 12 balls.

England, building towards the 2019 World Cup on home soil, have now won five successive ODI series.

Root's Test team, though, will stick in New Zealand for the two-Test series, with the day-night first game getting underway in Auckland on March 22 before the sides return to Christchurch for the second encounter from March 30.

Against the power-packed England, New Zealand will look forward to their key players to stand up and make it count. "We've had a good competitive series here, and we've loved every minute of the tour".

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson, a Yorkshire team-mate of Bairstow's, set aside his disappointment to deliver credit where it was due.

"If you only have five options that means you've got to drop another bowler and in the one-day game, almost every game, there is always someone for who it doesn't go as well as they'd like so it is always good to have that sixth option". Earlier he inspired in the field with a one-handed catch of Tim Southee running around the deep mid-wicket boundary.

A previously-out-of-form Nicholls made a restorative 50 before becoming Tom Curran's first wicket.

Santner, who rescued New Zealand in the first match, hit a personal-best 67 while Nicholls was out for 55.

"The disappointing thing was too many soft dismissals through that middle order". It was clean hitting. Had England batted first, or if they had been forced to chase 300, then there would have been a clearer indication of whether they are becoming mentally strong enough to win a global tournament, in comparison to all previous England one-day sides that have buckled. New Zealand came to bat bat did not present very handsome total. "I think [it was great] the way the guys went out in a game that people had compared to a knockout in the World Cup next year and said "Right, this is how we'll react". However, the victory for England was set up by their bowlers led by Chris Woakes who kept picking wickets to stranglehold the hosts.
