  • Visits by federal immigration authorities are spooking California businesses and workers

The Democrat mayor of Oakland, California, Libby Schaaf, issued a public announcement Monday warning illegal aliens of an impending raid by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Jim Ross, an Oakland political consultant, said Schaaf's warning could help rebuild trust with immigrant-advocacy organizations that may have disagreed with her defense of a West Oakland operation by ICE's Homeland Security Investigations division last August, during which city cops provided traffic control.

"It is Oakland's legal right to be a sanctuary city and we have not broken any laws", she said.

On Tuesday, the immigration agency said that since Sunday, it had arrested more than 150 people in the Bay Area who were in violation of immigration laws.

"Almost half of the arrests targeted criminal illegal aliens, including those with convictions for assault and battery, weapons charges and crimes against children", Townhall reported. 'She gave them warning, and there's 800 that we were unable to locate because of that warning, so that community's a lot less safe than it would have been'. President Donald Trump has held up the verdict as an outrageous example of how San Francisco's '"sanctuary city" laws fly in the face of public safety.

Schaaf said Tuesday she "did not regret sharing this information".

Federal authorities rounded up more than 200 people in 122 workplace raids in Los Angeles last Friday, part of a nationwide effort by the Trump administration to target so-called sanctuary jurisdictions.

A spokesman for Newark's ICE office said the agency continues to focus on undocumented immigrants who pose a threat.

An Immigration and Customs Enforcement statement said a number of the people arrested in the raids had lengthy criminal records, including Armando Nunez-Salgado.

"ICE's leadership has made clear that ICE will no longer exempt classes or categories of removable aliens from potential enforcement", Bible said. He also said the justice department was looking into whether Schaaf obstructed justice.

ICE has sent repeated hard-line messages since President Donald Trump took office previous year, declaring that undocumented immigrants should "look over [their] shoulder" and that politicians in sanctuary states should be prosecuted.

"I hope we take this moment to recognize that we have to fight against the racist myth that the Trump administration is trying to perpetuate - that immigrants are unsafe criminals", Schaaf said.

"We are not going to tolerate this in our community", said Lupe Delgado, community organizer for Faith in the Valley.

In January, immigration officials were reportedly preparing to arrest 1,500 undocumented individuals in Northern California.

"We have to fight against the racist myth that the Trump administration is trying to perpetuate, that immigrants are risky criminals", she said. Oakland has since strengthened its status as a sanctuary city by barring city officials from cooperating with ICE in any capacity.

Homan said ICE deportation officers were still able to remove many "public safety threats" from Bay Area streets. Danielle Bennett, an agency spokeswoman, said more information would be released later in the week.

Immigration lawyers at non-profits like the American Friends Service Committee and American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey have also seen an increase in arrests of undocumented immigrants with removal orders that come in for their routine check-ins with ICE.

Schaaf said the couple lived in Oakland and worked for 23 years to become legal residents.
