Oosthuizen leads after day one of World Golf Championship in Mexico

  • There is a field of 64 in Mexico

After hanging around in the first round of the 2018 WGC-Mexico Championship, Shubhankar Sharma used the second round to grab control of the leaderboard and put himself in prime position as the weekend heats up at Chapultepec Golf Club in Mexico City.

"It's the biggest tournament I've played in by a long stretch", Paisley said. "I'll keep trying to do what I've been doing for the next two days".

The Spanish duo of Sergio Garcia (65) and Rafa Cabrera Bello (67) were in a share of second on Friday, with American Xander Schauffele (68) on nine under.

Sharma's WGC debut comes after European Tour wins last December at the Joburg Open and last month in Malaysia at the Maybank Championship.

A win or runner-up finish for the 25-year-old Greystones man would have pushed him into the the world's top 50 and sealed a spot at Augusta in April.

Hardly anyone knew much about Schauffele a year ago before he played well at the U.S. Open, and then won the Greenbrier Classic and Tour Championship.

'I've been swinging it pretty good the last two or three weeks.

"I knew I had to hit a great 3-wood", Sharma said. 'I just wanted the first round to get out of the way, said Sharma, who has been hooked on golf ever since he was introduced to the game by his father as a six-year-old. "I kept the ball in the fairway and gave myself as many chances to attack the pin as possible".

Jordan Spieth, the British Open champion and former No. 1 in the world, was hitting balls behind him.

After starting with a birdie he carded bogeys at the fourth and eighth to go out in one over par before quite an eventful back nine. Obviously, the final destination for me is the PGA TOUR. "Let's hope I make a lot of (birdies and eagles) and I can donate as much money as possible".

Birdies at the 11th and 15th came either side of a double bogey at the 12th with three other bogeys leaving him to sign for 75.

"My favorite thing about that is I didn't have to putt", Johnson said.

Top-ranked defending champion Dustin Johnson eagled from 112 yards at the par-4 ninth, landing the ball beyond the hole with a 60-degree wedge and backspinning it into the cup. I drove it well.

Last year's victor, Dustin Johnson, still has some work to do if he's going to capture his third title in this tournament.
