Police Officer Killed, 2 Others Wounded While Responding to 911 Call

  • A Clinton Mo. police officer was killed in a shooting Tuesday

Two officers were injured and are being treated.

"I am at a loss for words right now", Brittany Seabaugh stated.

Around the time of 12:10 a.m. March 7, 2018, the S.W.A.T. team entered the premises, but when they looked inside, they found that the shooting suspect was already dead.

Missouri State Highway Patrol Sgt. Bill Lowe says the law enforcement community is saddened by the tragic event. "Our thoughts are with Officer Morton's family, the two officers who were injured, and the Clinton Police Department".

The Missouri Highway Patrol said Morton was a full-time Clinton officer from February 2015 through January 2017, when he temporarily became a reserve officer.

Authorities said the two women heard on the 911 call were not injured.

The two women heard arguing in the 911 call were not in any way connected to the Clinton home, Lowe said.

A number of weapons were also seized from the home, Lowe said. "At that point in time the suspect shot and killed one of the Clinton Police officers".

Authorities on Wednesday released a mug shot of Waters from a November 2017 arrest for unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of a controlled substance.

The 30-year-old is from Knob Noster, Missouri, approximately 70 miles or an hour and 15-minute drive east from the metro. "They're going to endure more", Sgt. Lowe said.

Morton was taken to a hospital and was later pronounced dead. He claims he's self-employed and a graduate of Westport High School. One suffered "moderate" injuries while the other suffered minor injuries, according to a spokesperson for the Missouri Highway Patrol.

Officer Christopher Morton of Clinton, MO Police Department was shot and killed in the line of duty Tuesday night.

Autopsies on the officer and suspect are pending.

Waters fatally shot Morton and wounded Bettencourt, who remains in stable condition. But the fact is they were in the act of committing crimes within that house.

Sheryl Long, one of the neighbors who witnessed the gun battle, said she the officers begged Waters during the standoff to let them tend to their fallen colleague.

Officers had been searching for Waters in connection to a rape case, but it was unclear how he was involved, Henry County Prosecuting Attorney Richard Shields said.

Multiple friends tell KMBC that Morton stepped up to serve with Clinton police after Officer Gary Michael was shot and killed in August.

When the officers entered the home, Lowe said they were doing what they were supposed to and that Widger's comments could not be taken at "face value".
