President Donald Trump says he's not anxious about Russian Federation meddling in the 2018 midterm elections.

"You don't want your system of votes to be compromised in any way", Trump said during a joint press conference with Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven.

Trump has frequently come under fire from Democrats and others who say he has not wholeheartedly embraced the intelligence community's assessment that Moscow meddled in the 2016 election. "We will counteract it very strongly".

Löfven was the first European leader to visit the White House since Trump announced he would apply stiff new tariffs on steel and aluminum last week. "I like seeing it", he said. He added, "The trade war hurts them it doesn't hurt us".

"As a member of the European Union, I think it's important for us to try to find a way to cooperate between the European Union and the United States", he said.

"We are extremely anxious about the consequences of a trade war and are urging the White House to not advance with this plan", the speaker said through a spokesperson.

Russia special counsel Robert Mueller last month indicted 13 Russians and three organizations for meddling in the presidential election - and Moscow claimed Monday to have evidence the USA has attempted to interfere in its forthcoming presidential vote.

Trump and Lfven also spoke about trade, with Trump saying he planned to move ahead with tariffs on imported steel and aluminum, noting that the US has always been "mistreated" by trade deals. "And I think it's the best way to go". "Sometimes they want to go out and do something else, but they all want to be in the White House".

The comments come less than a week after Trump announced that the USA will impose new tariffs, which function as a tax on imports, on steel and aluminum and make no exception for close allies such as Canada and the EU. "Many, many people want every single job", Trump said when asked about the future of the embattled Sessions, whom Trump periodically tweaks on Twitter.

Trump clearly does not agree. "Probably there was meddling from other countries", he said. Warmbier died shortly after being returned to the U.S. The U.S. has no formal diplomatic relations with North Korea.

"That hit a nerve for him", another user tweeted, noting that Trump preceded his statement with the phrase "believe me", a surefire sign that he was telling "a big fat lie". Only a few people in the room chuckled quietly, prompting the president to add "nobody got that".
