  • 2 Koreas won't march together

To mark the commencement of the 2018 Winter Paralympic games in PyeongChang, South Korea, Google has doodled a rather dynamic and colourful doodle.

Medals were up for grabs in alpine skiing and biathlon.

Unlike at the recent Winter Olympics, South Korea and North Korea marched separately, after failing to resolve differences about the nature of the proposed Korean unification flag.

Laurie Stephens - The Hamilton-Wenham and University of New Hampshire graduate is the most decorated athlete on the team, with six medals to her name (including two golds) since her first Paralympic Games in 2006.

Speaking at a rally in Pennsylvania, Trump also took credit for a reduced threat of a nuclear attack from North Korea surrounding Pyeongchang 2018.

Meghan Lino - Born and raised in Falmouth, Lino will compete in her second Paralympic Games.

We do have one Winter Paralympic gold medallist who hails from our shores, though, and that's Kelly Gallagher (two with Kelly's guide Charlotte Evans).

The USA, who have the biggest team at the Paralympics with 69 athletes, got off to a good start, wining three golds, one silver and a bronze.

Laurie Stephens captured the bronze win women's sitting downhill skiing.

In the biathlon - which combines skiing and shooting - United States of America took gold and silver in the women's sit ski, with Kendall Gretcsch coming first and Oskana Masters second.

"It was hard for me to train for this sport, but I think everyone has something that fits to his or her talents", he said.

The opening ceremony in the PyeongChang Olympic Stadium took place on a foggy evening with the 30,000-seat stadium partially filled.

The North's athletes may also have not been keen to march alongside a defector.

All of the NPA's gold medals came from biathlon: Ekaterina Rumyantseva taking gold in the women's standing and Mikhalina Lysova winning the women's 6km vision impaired event.

The North aims to participate for the first time in a Paralympic Games with two Paralympic cross-country athletes, and for this it has received an invitation from the International Paralympic Committee (ICC), according to the South Korean Ministry.

The rapid inter-Korean detente began at last month's Winter Olympics.

Representatives from both countries earlier in the day held discussions on whether their respective delegations would take the symbolic act of walking into Pyeongchang Olympic Stadium together on Friday.
