  • Rajya Sabha elections: BJP accuses Congress MLA Anila Bhediya of disclosing vote

Chief Minister Dr Raman Singh while extending his hearties congratulations to BJP National General Secretary Saroj Pandey for winning the lone seat of Rajya Sabha from Chhattisgarh, remarked on Congress that when one is clear about the situation, then such kind of pursuits should be avoided.

Thirty-three candidates from ten States, including Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Odisha had already been declared elected unopposed on March 15. BJP candidates in the fray were Jaitley, Ashok Bajpai, Vijay Pal Singh Tomar, Sakal Deep Rajbhar, Kanta Kardam, Anil Jain, Harnath Singh Yadav GVL Narasimha Rao and Anil Kumar Agarwal, a businessman.

Voting ended at 3 pm, an hour ahead of schedule, but there were dramatic scenes later on. Of them, the BJP won 17.

After the elections, BJP is now the largest party in the Rajya Sabha but is still short of majority.

"Congratulations to all those elected to the Rajya Sabha from various states and best wishes for their Parliamentary career".

In Jharkhand, BJP and Congress both managed to win one seat each. The Yogi campaigned exhaustively for his candidate; he blamed the loss on "overconfidence" and an underestimation of the alliance between Mayawati and Akhilesh Yadav, whose parties last worked together almost two decades ago and have been enraged with each other ever since. The four Trinamool candidates are sitting Rajya Sabha member Nadimul Haque and first time nominees Subhasish Chakraborty, Abir Biswas and Santanu Sen.

The SP also lodged a similar complaint with regard to MLA Nitin Agarwal, who had switched sides after his father quit the party and joined the BJP recently.

Left Front-backed CPI (M) candidate Rabin Deb lost the poll. Congress candidate and former union minister P Balram Naik was defeated, officials said.

The SP-BSP started with a setback as one SP and one BSP MLAs in jail were denied permission by the court to vote. TRS nominees Banda Prakash Mudiraj polled the highest 33 votes, followed by Joginipalli Santosh and Badugula Lingaiah Yadav polling 32 votes each.

For keeping their flock together and the MLAs of the Congress, BSP and numerous SP went together to the polling booth at the Tilak hall in state secretariat. The BSP chief had earlier said the alliance partners had failed to transfer their votes to the BSP in past elections.

Friday witnessed the voting for the Rajya Sabha elections 2018 in Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Karnataka, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana. The Election Commission declared the vote cast by independent member D Madhava Reddy invalid, as he had openly shown his choice to the Congress agent, violating the rules.
