Richard Sherman: Top takeaways from 49ers cornerback's Monday conference call

Great. We won a Super Bowl. He's familiar with the defensive scheme and the coordinator running it, Robert Saleh, a former Seahawks assistant who joined Sherman, Sherman's fiancee Ashley and coach Kyle Shanahan at Friday night's recruitment dinner in Los Gatos.

Obviously that meeting went well. In 2019 and 2020, Sherman's base salary is either $7 or $8 million with the same incentives package.

"But it's our position, the NFL Players Association's position and the Seattle Seahawks' position that it does not toll". So it should be a seamless transition for the cornerback.

In a lengthy article written on Monday by Peter King of Sports Illustrated, it was revealed that Sherman self-negotiated his contract with 49ers general manager John Lynch for four hours on Saturday.

Peters, with an NFL-leading 19 interceptions since 2015, is nearly five years younger than Sherman, who turns 30 at the end of this month.

Cornerback Richard Sherman, the 49ers' biggest nemesis for most of the past decade, is reportedly joining the organization he tormented for so long. The Oakland Raiders, who were also on the list of possible landing spots, weren't going to have enough cap space.

Lost in the postseason belief by many Seahawks fans that a few more field goals would have made the Seahawks 11-5 or 12-4 was the fact that Carroll/Schneider recognized this iteration of the Seahawks passed its expiration date with the Rams outcome.

"That had a huge part in it", Sherman told the San Jose Mercury News' Daniel Brown. "The way he played down the stretch was inspiring, it was incredible". I saw leadership. I saw the respect of his teammates.

Sherman's age, turning 30 this year, and his abrasive personality paired with him suffering a difficult-to-assess Achilles injury in 2017, meant there were no buyers. If Sherman returns to form, the 49ers will have locked up a top cornerback for a well-under-the-market rate. According to the Browns Pro Bowler, if Sherman wanted to prove himself, he should have signed a one-year deal, instead of letting the 49ers sit on his rights for three years. And honestly, if the receiver had said nothing at all, Sherman might have invented a slight to get his own hackles up.

It appears as if he's looking forward to that. "Would love to get to play in that stadium again, wearing different colors, trying my best to ruin their day, perhaps". San Francisco has a ton of money sitting in their bank account, even after retaining star QB Jimmy Garroppolo, and a veteran like Sherman could end up making a whole lot of sense.

As of now, though, it looks to be back on.
