  • Djokovic Continues Struggle To Return To Form As He Crashes In Miami

The fact that very few people were surprised to see Novak Djokovic lose to Benoit Paire in the second round of the Miami Open goes to show just how far he has fallen in the last two years. His primary physical problem is a right elbow injury, which kept him off the court for the past six months of a year ago and required what Djokovic's camp refers to as a "small medical intervention" after the Australian Open in January.

Federer's defeat means he will relinquish his status as world No.1 with Rafael Nadal set for a return to the head of the rankings on April 2.

In other matches, Denis Shapovalov beat Viktor Troicki 6-3 6-7 (7-4) 7-6 (8-6), Steve Johnson defeated Victor Estrella Burgos 6-3 6-3, Guillermo Garcia-Lopez eliminated Tennys Sandgren 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (8-6) and Leonardo Mayer proved too strong for Donald Young, winning 3-6 6-4 6-2.

It is Djokovic's third consecutive defeat since he reached the Australian Open fourth round in January.

For Benoite Paire though, who lost to little-known American Mitchell Kruger in Indian Wells, this is a big opportunity, as he progresses to the third round to face another Serb-Filip Krajinovic.

"Well, I just feel like - so there are three frames". Just it's impossible at the moment. "I love playing on the hard court". I want to be able to play as well as I want to play. I'm aware of that. "He was just coming up with the good shots at the right time. Obviously, I compromised my game and the movement and everything because of the injury".

On Friday, Del Potro plays the same first opponent he beat past year, Robin Haase. I wanted to get a couple of tournaments before the clay court season starts. I'm trying to figure things out'.

"I wanted to come to Indian Wells and Miami because I wanted to see whether I [could] play a match", Djokovic explained. The event is moving next year to the Miami Dolphins' stadium. "I'm not at the level that I used to be", Djokovic said.

Djokovic sat out the last half of 2017 because of problems with his racket-swinging arm, saying it had been bothering him for more than a year.

"I obviously wasn't ready for that".
