Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has seen his club career take off on a meteoric rise lately.

"I know you don't really sign players for the worldwide team but England were interested in him, and it's fantastic he's chosen to play for Scotland".

Former Scotland striker James McFadden speaking on BBC Scotland's Sportsound. "If he's got that, it'd be very hard for him to play for England".

McLeish then met with the player at United's Carrington training complex on Thursday to persuade him to choose Scotland. "It's a bit of both - I want them both to do well". All of a sudden you're putting pressure on yourself to win the game single-handedly. "It sounds like his father has picked it more than him".

Fletcher left United in 2015, when McTominay was still emerging, but he has been encouraged by what he has heard from United players and coaches.

The United manager added: "The kid is very "feet on the ground", he's very calm, so I think he passed some important tests not by the football point of view but the mental point of view - maturity, calm play against champions, play knockout in the Champions League, two tests by the mental approach". "I can't confirm because I have no information about that and my advice to him is not about national teams, is not about that".

"That's not to say he's not got ability himself but sometimes when you first come into the team, especially at Man United, you've got to earn the right".

Manchester United finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last season. "I feel good, fit, strong".

Scotland certainly have a talented player on their hands as well and would do well to build around him and other young Scottish stars in their bid to qualify for the next World Cup.
