  • Search called off for missing man in Chemical Plant Explosion

The Environmental Protection Agency as well as a hazmat team were at the Tri-Chem Industrial plant throughout the day making sure what left the chemical plant is safe enough for rescuers to go inside to search for Dylan Mitchell.

- Hazardous materials crews have resumed the search for a worker who is missing and presumed dead following an explosion at a Hood County chemical plant that injured two co-workers.

The state's on-site emergency spokesman, Staff Sgt. Earl Gillum of the Texas Department of Public Safety, said the search has gone from a rescue effort to a recovery effort.

Once the flames died down, crews entered to search for the missing worker but were unable to find him.

The worker was taken by ambulance to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas.

"We sent crews out, and as soon as they got out there, they called for help", said Mayor Bob Cornett.

The missing worker has been identified as 27-year-old Dylan Mitchell. That worker is hospitalized with critical burns.

An official says an explosion at a rural Texas chemical plant injured two workers and that a third is missing, and that fire crews are being kept away from the blaze because of toxic fumes and fear of another explosion.

In a story March 15 about an explosion and fire at a North Texas chemical plant, The Associated Press reported erroneously that a missing worker is named Dillon Mitchell.

Cornett told The Associated Press that Tri-Chem Industries mixes chemicals that are primarily used by the oil and gas industry to drill disposal wells.

Tri-Chem's Cresson plant stored chemicals that were toxic, flammable and corrosive, according to Hood County records of the company's 2017 Tier 2 chemical inventory. Reportedly, chemicals were being mixed as the worker caused the spark.

One man says his brother is still missing.

Dylan Mitchell, 27, is believed to have been inside the Tri-Chem Industries Plant, located along Texas 171 in the town of Cresson about 20 miles southwest of Fort Worth, Thursday when something sparked a fire and explosion that consumed the building. But Rhodes says emergency responders have been evacuated from the vicinity because of fears of another explosion.

"Hours. It's been hours and no one's heard from him or seen him", he said.
