  • Landmarks go dark for 'Earth Hour'

Earth Hour 2018 switch-off will take place on Saturday 24 March at 8:30 p.m.

The Sydney Opera House, the Eiffel Tower and Moscow's Red Square were among the world landmarks to go dark Saturday, as part of a global campaign to raise awareness about the impacts of climate change.

The number of participating countries has increased every year since the Earth Hour movement began.

Tomorrow's highlight will be the Earth Hour countdown at 8.30pm when the complex will connect with Earth Hour Brunei via live feed at Bandar Seri Begawan.

BC Hydro says the province-wide, there was a reduction of energy usage during last year's Earth Hour of just 0.3 per cent, compared to two per cent in energy savings back in 2008.

"Earth Hour is a symbolic representation of the power that we all have to make a difference in the fight against climate change", he said.

This year the event is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Within the framework of this event, participants will be able to vote for one of three initiatives: protecting natural areas, removing the obstacles hindering the development of alternative energy, and implementing a system of separate waste collection.

"Several Restaurants in Dockyard will also be serving candle light dinners featuring special Earth Day Menus so there will be many options for everyone to dine with us in the West End on the night". Started in Sydney in 2007, Earth Hour has grown to become the world's largest grassroots movement for the environment, inspiring individuals, communities, businesses and organizations in over 170 countries and territories to take tangible climate action. "Reducing our energy use is an important step toward a better planet, but it's never been the goal of the 60-minute Earth Hour".

Hydro Ottawa will once again stand in solidarity with millions of people worldwide for Earth Hour.

Various locations across Ireland are also hosting events to mark Earth Hour.

In New Delhi, the lights have gone off at the city's great arch.
