To be or not to be? Egypt bans Uber

Many Egyptians who depend on ride-hailing services, Uber and Careem must find an alternative as an administrative court in the country has ordered the government to ban their activities.

Careem "affirms the continuation of operations normally and it (Careem) has not been officially notified of ceasing its operations", it said on Twitter. The services have recently started offering rides on scooters and tuk-tuks, three-wheeled motorized vehicles that can sometimes squeeze through the gridlock.

An Egyptian administrative court issued the decision on Tuesday after a group of taxi-drivers filed a case in February previous year accusing the Dubai-based Careem and San Francisco-based Uber of violating traffic laws by using private-owned vehicles for commercial purposes.

Careem has released a statement on their Facebook page saying that they haven't received any official notes to stop working; they confirm that they are still operating. "We will appeal this decision, and continue to be available in Egypt in the meantime".

Drivers with Uber and Careem say they are harassed both by taxi drivers and by police - echoing concerns elsewhere in the region.

Drivers of Egypt's white taxi cabs have protested against the two ride-hailing companies, who entered the market in 2014, after they began to lose customers.

"It is important to clarify that today's verdict does not mean suspending the operations of Uber in Egypt", Waked said, adding the firm could not comment on "ongoing legal proceedings". Until then, commuters either used public transport or Cairo's often-dilapidated and dusty taxis, whose drivers routinely refuse to switch on their meters, leading to frequent disputes over fares.
