Trump pulls back on transgender military ban

  • President Donald Trump speaks during a cabinet meeting at the White House Thursday

The new directive comes after an adopted recommendation from defence secretary Jim Mattis, who said '"transgender persons who require or have undergone gender transition" can not serve in the military.

Eastburn could not say how many transgender service members are in the military, because the Pentagon classifies troops as men or women. The decision amounts to a "grandfathering" of those affected by the new policy.

At least four lawsuits have been filed seeking to overturn the ban, and several courts issued preliminary injunctions while the cases proceed.

The implementation of a transgender ban in the military had been blocked by multiple federal judges. This ignited a debate and led to a legal battle in the state.

Trump issued orders to ban transgender troops who require significant medical treatment to be exempt from the US military with the exception of select cases.

As noted by U.S. Rep. Dave Bratt, R-Va., during an appearance on Fox News' "The Ingraham Angle", who was responding to a question of whether Trump was throwing this out as a concession to his base after signing the $1.3 trillion omnibus bill, people are exhausted of the U.S. Military being used as a laboratory for social engineering. That's all. This president will forever be remembered for his bigoted and spineless attacks on trans troops bravely serving our nation.

A 2016 study conducted by the government-funded RAND Corporation for the Pentagon estimated that almost 4,000 transgender troops were serving on active duty and in the reserves.

"It referred to limited and heavily caveated data to support its conclusions, glossed over the impacts of health care costs, readiness and unit cohesion, and erroneously relied on the selective experiences of foreign militaries with different operational requirements than our own", Mattis wrote.

"In short", Mattis concluded, "this policy issue has proven more complex than the prior administration or RAND assumed".

The ban follows Trump's erratic announcement in July 2017, when through a series of Tweets he stated his intention to ban transgender individuals from serving in any capacity in the United States military. The president, without any plan in place, cited the "tremendous medical costs and disruption" that he believed transgender military service would cause, and said that he had consulted with "my Generals and military experts".

Donald Trump maintains his intention to prohibit most transgenders from serving in the Army. According to the ban, these individuals will be allowed to continue to serve in the military. "It's a gross mischaracterization of transgender people, and it's bad for our. military". Until then, the Pentagon considered gender dysphoria a disqualifying mental illness.

Trump announced the ban in July to resolve a quietly brewing fight on Capitol Hill over whether taxpayer money should pay for gender transition and hormone therapy for transgender service members.

Under the court rulings the Pentagon was required to begin accepting transgender recruits on January 1 - and has reportedly accepted at least one transgender recruit so far this year.

Trump's tweets came a few weeks later.

Civil rights advocates said while some transgender service members might be permitted to continue to serve under the announced policy, the exceptions seemed unclear and the policy was likely to foster a hostile climate for those who seek to continue to serve.

The new policy, according to Sanders, was "developed through extensive study by senior uniformed and civilian leaders, including combat veterans", under the direction of Defense Secretary James Mattis.
