"We will work together for an independent, open and prosperous Indo-Pacific region where sovereignty and global laws are respected and disputes are resolved through dialogue", Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a joint address to the media with visiting Vietnam President Tran Dai Quang following delegation-level bilateral discussions here.

The three pacts signed after the talks between the two leaders would provide for cooperation in areas of nuclear energy, trade and agriculture.

The Vietnamese leader started yesterday a three-day visit to the South Asian giant, after which he will leave for Bangladesh to fulfill an invitation from President Mohammad Abdul Hamid.

On his part, Quang said that both countries will work together for regional security, including maritime and cyber security.

China has often been accused by the US, Japan, ASEAN nations and others of undermining the "rules-based order" in the region.

Modi called defense and security cooperation a pillar of strong Indo-Vietnamese ties.

Regarding defense cooperation, the Prime Minister emphasized that both sides chose to collaborate through technology transfer.

The prime minister said trade between the two countries has grown from $6 billion to over $10 billion in the past five years.

During the talks, Modi said India and Vietnam have also "agreed" to deepen trade and investment ties in sectors like oil and gas exploration, renewable energy, agriculture and textiles.

India-Vietnam relations, he said, are not only important for the two countries but also for the peace and security of the region.

Vietnam President Tran Dai Quang attended the Vietnam-India Business Forum in the national capital.

"Vietnamese President Tran Dai Quang was accorded a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan in the presence of President Shri Ram Nath Kovind and PM Narendra Modi", External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar tweeted.

He stressed that Vietnam and India boast long-standing relations in culture and religion when Buddhism entered Vietnam thousands of years ago and now continues to develop and deeply impart its values to Vietnamese people.
