Watson crushes Kisner to claim Match Play crown

  • Rory Mc Ilroy had a nightmarish start to his round Friday

And while excited to be returning to Augusta National for what will be a 10th appearance since making his debut in 2008 Watson spoke of his determination also to be heading to France in September either as a playing member or a vice-captain of Jim Furyk's US side.

He spent a lot of time soul-searching, talking to Angie, his caddie Ted Scott and the team around him.

Two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson won the WGC Match-Play Championship on Sunday, routing Kevin Kisner 7&6 in the final after denying Justin Thomas the world number one ranking in the semifinals.

For Watson, it was his second victory on the PGA Tour this season and the 11th of his career.

"Rory did not play his best golf today but I played extremely well", two-times PGA Tour victor Harman told Golf Channel. "I'm a kid who happens to be 30 now, and somehow I keep getting trophies". This is the third year at Austin Country Club.

He doesn't like this format. The Tour rookie has been in the final group on Sunday in each of his past two starts.

Even when he reached the final round, he never imagined he would be playing for the title. Justin Thomas will have a mathematical chance to reach No. 1 this week.

Watson caught him on a day when Thomas couldn't buy a putt, and Watson made his share of them in a 3-and-2 victory that sent him into a championship match that wasn't much of a contest.

Kisner had beaten former Scottish Open champion Alex Noren in a high-quality semi-final and the championship match looked set to be a tight affair. Kisner hit a awful drive at the third and a poor bunker shot at the fourth.

One year after Watson disappeared from among the elite in golf, he has won twice in his last four starts. He was not in a good spot.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, he ruled out a second appearance in the tournament this year.

All he ever wanted was to make the PGA Tour. And he doesn't get into details of the conversation he had with his wife and those closest around him, when he contemplated retirement.

The alternative was to return to relative obscurity in Pensacola, Florida, running his Chevy vehicle dealership, a candy shop named "Bubba's Sweet Spot", the Blue Wahoos Double A baseball team and a 256-apartment complex. "I played great right up until that point", he said. "And then, making the putts".

It goes back to his vision, and the reason he was attracted to golf in the first place. "I love it today, though".

"He has every facet of the game he needs for the golf course". That was my passion.

He missed the cut, complained about fans and insulted the entire country with these statements about his time sightseeing: "I don't know the names of all the things, the big tower, Eiffel Tower, an arch (Arc de Triomphe), whatever I rode around in a circle".

Not only did Noren prove he can handle the pressure of match play on the biggest of stages - having claimed a top five at the same event previous year - he also showed he has the game to take on the USA's finest in front of their own home crowds.

Watson played 109 holes over seven matches, going to the 18th hole just once when he halved his match with Julian Suri on Friday. He seemed amazed that he'd faced "four or five shots" all week where he felt uncommitted and unfocused. He heads off to his vacation, delayed by one day, at No. 21 in the world.
