  • WhatsApp co-founder tweets 'It is time. Delete Facebook'

The messaging app, one of the most popular apps in the world, allows users to place phone calls, and send and receive messages free over the internet.

Incidentally, Facebook acquired WhatsApp in 2014, for $19 billion.

This points to a major loophole in Facebook's API, which allows third-party developers to collect data not just from the users of the Facebook app, but also from that user's friends network on the social media platform.

This is after the social media giant came under fire this week following reports that it gave access to data of over 50 million users to British firm Cambridge Analytica. In his recent tweet, Acton says "It is time #deletefacebook". WhatsApp co-founder, Jan Koum, continues to run the company and sits on Facebook's board. With the Anton then chose to invest $50 million into Signal Foundation, a non-profit organization and direct alternative to WhatsApp.

They did this by creating a quiz that was taken by 270,000 Facebook users.

The scandal has been growing since Friday night, when Facebook said it had suspended the accounts of data firm Cambridge Analytica, its parent company, psychology professor at the University of Cambridge named Dr. Aleksandr Kogan and whistleblower Christopher Wylie. According to reports by the Observer and New York Times, Cambridge Analytica illegally used the personal information obtained via Facebook to profile and target voters with political advertisements. Kogan violated the Facebook policy by selling the data as the app was not allowed to use the data for commercial purposes.

He further claimed that Facebook felt like it was better not to know what happened with the data as it was in a stronger legal position if it didn't know about the abuse that was happening.
