Special counsel Robert Mueller may very well have just crossed one of Trump's red lines in his investigation into the White House's connections to Russian Federation.

The White House and the Trump Organisation have yet to comment on the subpoenas. Mr. Trump did not say what he would do if Mueller took the investigation in that direction, however.

The probe by special counsel Robert Mueller into Russia's influence on the last presidential election is about to get murky after an organisation belonging to President Donald Trump got subpoenaed.

The subpoena's intention was to "clean up" and to ensure that all related documents are handed over to the special counsel.

He added that "our assistance and cooperation with the various investigations remains the same today".

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders reiterated during her daily briefing that the president was cooperating with the special counsel inquiry and referred further questions to the Trump Organization.

The Times, citing two people briefed on the matter, said the subpoena was delivered "in recent weeks". The company has said that it never had real estate holdings in Russian Federation, but witnesses recently interviewed by Mueller have been asked about a possible real estate deal in Moscow.

The administration is also targeting the Internet Research Agency that Mueller says orchestrated much of the cyber-meddling in the presidential election.

In a statement released by lawyer's representing the Trump Organization, the legal team called reports of Mueller's latest action "old news". In 2015, a longtime business associate of Trump's emailed Trump's lawyer, Michael Cohen, at his Trump Organization account claiming he had ties to President Vladimir Putin of Russian Federation and said building a Trump Tower in Moscow would help Trump's presidential campaign.

The subpoena is a sign that the Mueller investigation continues to pick up steam, even as Trump decries remaining questions about potential coordination between his associates and Russian Federation and denies any wrongdoing.

Mueller is investigating Russian attempts to influence the 2016 US election, and potential collusion by Trump aides.
