Woods closes to within 1 shot of Canadian rookie Conners

Indeed. Conners, who finished six strokes out of Monday qualifying but got in the field anyway as the third alternate when Kyle Stanley withdrew from the event, has led after every round this week at the Valspar.

Both Woods and Snedeker shot 4-under 67 during Saturday's third round to get within one of leader Corey Conners (-9). Also one back are Brandt Snedeker, who is coming off a rib injury of his own, and Justin Rose, who has been playing fantastically since the end of last season.

But Woods is just one shot back heading into what promises to be a gut-churning final round Sunday at Innisbrook Resort, where he shot a third-round, 4-under 67 on the Copperhead course to pick up more momentum in his impressive comeback from spinal fusion surgery.

Woods hasn't won since his seven-shot victory in the Bridgestone Invitational in August 2013. Rose shot 5-under 66 with an eagle hole-out from 120 yards at the par-5 11 hole to get into Sunday's final pairing with Conners at 2 p.m. ET.

"I didn't want to go there".

As you can see, most people are supportive of Tiger being back. "It's fun seeing him out there, and I'm sure he'll be battling hard tomorrow, but hopefully I can play my game and have a good day".

"Loud as I've heard it in a long time", Snedeker said.

"I'm finding the rhythm of the round, hitting shots, I don't have a problem posting scores". I'm starting to get a better feel for it.

"I was living from minute to minute", Woods said. "He's back in action and everyone's rooting for him".

"To play myself into contention this early into it was nice, and on top of that, to build on what I did a week ago", he said, referring to the Honda Classic when he was on the fringe of contention going to the back nine.

Golf's dominant figure for much of the past two decades, Woods was the centre of attention once again at Palm Harbor on Saturday, with huge crowds gathering to see if the former world number one could continue a hugely encouraging week. He said his doctors had not given him clearance to hit balls. "It kind of feels like you're playing in a major championship in a normal round, which if anything should bring out better golf for me".

Woods said on Saturday, however, that he had not been prepared to risk it until he basically had no other choice if he wanted to have a chance of living pain-free and playing competitive golf again.
