Xi Jinping's power grab could lead to political catastrophe in China

  • China Communist Party proposes removing presidential term limits

Xi's ambitious Belt and Road Initiative was undertaken to fuel economic growth in China by undertaking infrastructure and related projects in countries overseas, Xi has sought to export Chinese manpower and manufacturing capabilities, along with Chinese capital.

On Sunday, the party's central committee recommended that the two-term limit for China's president and vice-president be removed - in effect, Xi Jinping could lead the country indefinitely.

His comments came as reports said Chinese censors were deleting satirical comments about the CPC's move.

However, according to the Associated Press, the proposal to end the two-term limit will likely be accepted at that same meeting. Key search topics such as "serve another term" were censored.

Given that the Communist Party allows no opposition parties and suppresses dissenting political voices, the proposal is expected to be passed by China's rubber-stamp Parliament in early March.

The US has indicated that President Donald Trump is not overly anxious by China's ruling Communist Party's plan to abolish presidential term limits, a move that could allow President Xi Jinping to rule for life, saying it was up to China to decide "what is best" for the country.

A simple thirst for power is another possible motivation. It is ironic to say the least, considering Russia's tumble from world power to regional bully is the single most studied negative example in Chinese political circles.

Other users compared Xi to a dictator, a term that was often used to describe China's own communist founder Mao Zedong. We need to build on the concept of India being a leading power in the region and the World and accordingly India should build partnership with like-minded countries as has been proposed in the quadrilateral partnership with Australia, Japan and United States for "free and open Indo-Pacific". "In foreign policy, he also did a good job by taking tough positions in the face of provocations from the U.S".

The letter warned that removing one of Deng Xiaoping's most important political legacies would "sow the seeds of turmoil", adding that China had no reason to regress.

Such concerns prompted the Trump administration in December to brand China a "revisionist power" that threatens US economic strength and national security by seeking to reshape the global order. Others have noted that Xi needs to concentrate more power in his hands in order to force through wrenching economic reforms.

President Xi Jinping first announced the new detention system in the fall of a year ago, when it also faced scrutiny by legal scholars and human rights activists.

But many Chinese I speak with are anxious.

This strategy is one Dreyer said China could eventually implement in the East China Sea, where Beijing and Tokyo are embroiled in a dispute over the Japanese-controlled Senkaku Islands, known in China as the Diaoyu.

Term limits on officeholders have been in place since they were included in the 1982 constitution, when lifetime tenure was abolished.

The US-based tracker of the Chinese internet, China Digital Times, said several words and phrases such as "my emperor", "ascend the throne", "I oppose", and "lifelong" had been blocked. "In the long run, however, this will probably further complicate the perennial problem that authoritarian states confront in finding a way to peacefully and orderly transfer power".

President Xi Jinping has become China's most powerful leader.

Xi appeared to signal his intention at last year's party national congress by breaking with the convention of appointing an heir-apparent to the all-powerful Politburo Standing Committee. But the party has yet to name a successor to the 64-year-old "core leader" - another title given to Xi in 2016.

Recent months have also seen a growing number of references in state media to Xi as "leader", a minimalist title reserved up until now for Mao.
