  • Antonio Conte: 'Game against West Ham United explains Chelsea's season'

The stuttering champions are now 10 points behind Tottenham and Blues boss Conte admits a top-four finish looks an increasingly forlorn hope.

Chelsea took a deserved lead through Cesar Azpilicueta on 36 minutes and mustered 23 efforts on the West Ham goal, but a combination of poor finishing and inspired goalkeeping from Joe Hart ensured the game was still close when Hernandez replaced Gelson Fernandes with 20 minutes remaining.

Last Sunday's 3-1 defeat by fourth-placed Tottenham left Chelsea eight points off the qualification places before this week's round of Premier League matches.

Football mourned the loss of Ray Wilkins last Wednesday, as he passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest. "Football is simple: If you score, you win". There have been many games where we put in a good performance, creating many chances, but we are not clinical.

The old maestro would have enjoyed much of the football as Cesar Azpilicueta put his beloved Blues ahead but not the way they missed a hatful of chances to allow West Ham back into the game, making Chicharito's late leveller nearly predictable.

Chelsea FC still have the chance to end the season with a trophy, with the Blues set to take on Southampton in the FA Cup semi-finals later this month.

Conte said: "This game describes our season".

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has admitted that he is saddened and angry about his sides struggles this season. We are talking about improving but now another not positive result as we drew. you have to win this game. To speak about the gap between us and Manchester City now is not right. But today, we must win this game.

West Ham manager David Moyes, meanwhile, said: 'We were incredibly committed.

"We are very sad because it is very hard to accept this news".

Victor Moses' cross bounced around the West Ham area before falling to the feet of Azpilicueta, who could not miss from a couple of yards out.

And in the 73rd minute Marko Arnautovic collected Gary Cahill's weak headed clearance and cut the ball back for Hernandez to slot home.

"We must be realistic to understand that this defeat was a bad defeat for us", he added.
