Apple acquired Texture just last month and apparently has already let twenty employees go as they work to assimilate the company.

The new Texture-News hybrid could launch in the next year.

The Cupertino company now offers access to a variety of news services through its Apple News app, however, many of these require individual subscriptions. Apple declined to comment... The new service will be related to news and following Apple's acquisition of the Texture app, the news subscription service seems like a good move.

Integrating the current Apple News app and recently acquired Texture service, the new Apple news subscription service would give magazine publishers a slice of the revenue. At the time, Beats Music had fewer than a million subscribers, and Apple has turned that into more than 40 million paying users.

Apple's services business is orders of magnitude smaller than its hardware business, but the company has had success with its Apple Music service, which now boasts almost 40 million subscribers.

Apple's foray into digital journalism highlights the Cupertino tech giant's rapid expansion in its services segment, which includes Apple Music, iBooks and other services.

This ties into expectations of an upgraded Apple News experience within the next year and Apple's lofty goal of increasing profits of its services division by 60% by 2021.

Currently, Apple sells subscriptions for iCloud storage and Apple Music. The company could also choose to turn its original video content efforts into its own Netflix-like video subscription service. The staff was made up of about 100 people before Apple bought it, but Bloomberg points out that Apple also laid off 200 people when it picked up Beats in 2014.

There will be some sort of revenue split between Apple and the publishers who will be featured in the service, but there's no details on that. Apple cut around 20 people from Texture team shortly after buying the app in March, people familiar with the company's plans told Bloomberg.
