While impressive that facilities in 43 countries are powered with clean energy, its many suppliers are still working at it. Apple has convinced nine more suppliers "to power all of their Apple production with 100 percent clean energy, bringing the total number of supplier commitments to 23".

Update: Fast Company has an exclusive interview with Apple VP of environment, policy, and social initiatives, Lisa Jackson. It also has 15 more projects in construction.

The achievement informs consumers around the world that it's not only possible for massive publicly traded global corporations to source 100% of their energy from renewables, but that its also the right financial decision. While in Singapore, Apple says it adapted to the nation state's tiny footprint and installed solar panels on the rooftops of 800 buildings.

Overall, renewable energies now make up around 20 percent (link in Chinese) of China's energy consumption, while coal accounts for over 60 percent. It is now the largest LEED Platinum-certified office building in North America that brings together solar, biogas, batteries, and a microgrid controller to keep everything playing nicely together to meet the energy needs of the facility.

Mr Mahu stated that now, renewable energy contributed about one per cent to the national power generation mix, but the focus was to reach 10 per cent by 2030.

The company now has 25 operational renewable energy projects around the world, totalling 626MW of generation capacity.

Apple said its deals with utilities had resulted in 25 operating renewable projects totaling 625MW, part of a portfolio that will eventually total 1.4GW across 11 countries.

Apple's data center in Maiden, North Carolina, is supported by projects that generate 244 million kilowatt-hours of renewable energy per year, which is equivalent to the energy used by 17,906 North Carolina homes.

San Francisco: Apple said Monday it had achieved a goal of "100 percent clean energy" for its facilities around the world.

Being 100% renewable does not mean that every Apple Store is powered by a solar farm, of course. That puts clean energy back into the power grid in greater measure than the company uses.

And over 85 suppliers have signed up for Apple's Clean Energy Portal that helps suppliers find renewable energy in different regions around the world.

In regard to the supply chain, the story is not as clean.

Apple, Google and technology-based peers such as Facebook and Amazon have been among the leaders of the corporate renewable energy movement, procuring large volumes of power for the data centres that underpin their operations. This is up from 14 in 2016 and includes names like Finisar and Pegatron, a key iPhone assembler.
