Kaiser knows that going from mining people's data to helping them protect it may seem hypocritical, but her professional 180 is due to the fact that she understands exactly how the industry works. "You're the product", Birgitta Jonsdottir told RT's Caleb Maupin.

Facebook users who didn't get the notice can check the platform's help page to confirm that they weren't affected.

There are significant risks to usage and disclosure of private information, and Cambridge Analytica is one of the largest offenders on the social media platform and was caught exposing data of up to 87 million Facebook users.

The notifications began appearing hours before Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg testified about the privacy scandal in a US Senate hearing Tuesday.

Facebook's attempt to limit fallout from a massive data breach hit trouble in Germany on Friday as a privacy watchdog opened a case against the social network and politicians accused its bosses of evasion. Meanwhile, Mozilla announced last month that it would be halting its advertising on Facebook until the site strengthens its policy on user data, while Elon Musk also deleted the Facebook profiles of his companies Tesla and SpaceX.

Many privacy advocates have criticized Facebook over its handling of the situation, and the FTC is now investigating whether the company violated the consent decree.

"The standard that we hold ourselves to is not just following the laws that are in place", Zuckerberg said. "It was my mistake, and I'm sorry".

While Facebook has already started this approach, devoting more resources to this effort would allow for a quicker and more intelligent sweep of bad content.

He went on to say it's not enough to give people control of their information.

"I advised Sheryl Sandberg that Zuckerberg should accept the invitation from the European Parliament".

But the ACLU argues that users don't have full control over their information.

The results suggest that some users don't feel like they have the power to act against tech giants such as Facebook. "PwC performed test procedures to assess the effectiveness of the Facebook privacy controls implemented to meet or exceed the protections required by Part IV of the [consent decree]". "Members should enact comprehensive privacy legislation to ensure that consumer rights are protected". Facebook said more than 70 million of the affected users are in the U.S., though there are over a million each in the Philippines, Indonesia and the UK. "They must also take proactive steps, including auditing and facilitation independent research, to assess and protect against ad discrimination outside of these contexts".
