In the early hours of Saturday, Royal Canadian Mounted Police inspector Ted Munro said rescue efforts were ongoing and said they had set up an information and support centre for families at the Nipawin Apostolic Church.

"This team has been an incredible rock in this community", he said.

In a news release published Saturday, York Athletics & Recreation said that the university was "extremely saddened" by news that former York University hockey player Mark Cross was one of the victims of the tragic crash.

Kevin Henry, a coach who runs a hockey school in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, said people there are in shock.

Canadians have become mourners as they have learned more about the identities of the deceased on the bus that was driving the Humboldt Broncos hockey team to a crucial playoff game Friday against the Nipawin Hawks.

Michelle Straschnitzki, who lives in Airdrie, said her 18-year old son Ryan had been taken to hospital in Saskatoon. "To say we were proud that he was giving back by becoming a coach would be an understatement", the written statement read.

"He liked sports, but at times I think he tolerated sports so he could be a teammate", said Thomas in an interview.

"In talking to him, he spoke at length of his time in rinks with his own family and now how much he enjoyed being able to take and watch other teams from minor, to senior to SJHL to their hockey games", a spokesperson for the Tigers wrote on Facebook. "I can't say enough good things about them", Schatz said.

"Stay Hockey family strong", wrote one donor on the GoFundMe site who said he was a coach from rural Saskatchewan.

"We know that the way we're going to get through this is by leaning on each other", Garinger said. "We know that the coroner and their office needs to do their work and let families know".

"We just need to try to support each other as we deal with this incredible loss to our community, to our province, to our hockey world".

"People are in such shock. We'd end up going through a whole tin every game", said Beaudry.

"He was a wonderful young man".

"I grew up playing hockey in Saskatchewan, so just do what you can to help out the hockey community".

"He always had a smile on his face", said Porter, who described Hunter as a "smart kid and a great hockey player" with a "great sense of humour". All of the injured were rushed to hospitals in Saskatoon.

"I can not imagine what these parents are going through, and my heart goes out to everyone affected by this awful tragedy, in the Humboldt community and beyond", Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wrote in a tweet.

"We send condolence, comfort and strength to all affected by the devastating crash involving the Humboldt Broncos' team bus", the National Hockey League said on Twitter.

The Western Hockey League Swift Current Broncos expressed their condolences.

"Brody had recently joined our Golden West family, mentored by Tyler and the Bolt FM team", Lydon Frieson, president of Golden West Radio, said in a statement posted on the station's website.

"From a grieving province, thank you to every one of the first responders and medical professionals for your courageous response under the most hard circumstances imaginable".

Humboldt, a town of about 6,000, has a long tradition of fielding teams in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. It's open to North American-born players between the age of 16 and 20.
