  • 35 sick from E. Coli outbreak traced to romaine lettuce

The restaurants reported using bagged, chopped romaine lettuce to make salads. Customers may also bring in the qualifying receipt to receive a refund on their purchase of the affected product.

Montana has experienced two E. Coli outbreaks in the past three years, according to Hinnenkamp.

The CDC and the FDA are advising people that before they eat lettuce from a restaurant to confirm that the product used to prepare the meal is not chopped romaine lettuce from the Yuma growing region.

Since March, 35 people have gotten sick, including 22 people who have been hospitalized, three of whom developed kidney failure.

Pennsylvania has the highest number of people infected, followed by Idaho and New Jersey. Some people infected with E. Coli also present with a low-grade fever below 101 degrees, but most get better within five to seven days. This weekend stores here in Page had signs about the information and their pre-made salads were almost sold out- the CDC says the bags of pre-made salad containing romaine are not considered safe either so be on the safe side and toss in the trash and not in a salad.

Any lettuce that came from that area (and there's a LOT!) has been pulled from shelves, people are urged to dispose of any recently purchased from the store that originated in that region.

This is not the first time romaine lettuce were linked to the spread of E. coli.

States that have reported people infected with the E. coli strain include Washington, Idaho, Missouri, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and MI.

Colonies of E. coli bacteria grown on a Hektoen enteric (HE) agar plate are seen in a microscopic image courtesy of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Twenty-six (93%) of 28 people interviewed reported consuming romaine lettuce in the week before their illness started.

Officials said laboratory testing confirms three cases are linked to a multi-state outbreak and four more are suspected while further testing is pending. Symptoms include bloody diarrhea, severe stomach cramps and vomiting.
