Coli Warning To All Romaine Lettuce

  • Should You Throw Out Your Lettuce? Here's What to Know About the Romaine Lettuce E. Coli Outbreak

Since no single grower, brand, or distributor has been implicated in the outbreak, consumers should also dispose of any store-bought romaine lettuce they already have at home, the advisory says. The warning includes all romaine lettuce, hearts, and salad mixes containing romaine.

The CDC noted that product labels often don't identify growing regions; any lettuce not marked should be tossed, even if part of it has been eaten and nobody became ill.

United States authorities have urged customers to stay clear of romaine lettuce, pre warning that an E coli break out has afflicted hundreds within numerous states.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state and local partners, are investigating a multistate outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 illness linked to romaine lettuce grown in Yuma, Arizona. Restaurants may know, but unless the restaurant can assure patrons that their romaine is not from the Yuma, Arizona area, people should not eat it, the CDC said. "Ask your suppliers about the source of their romaine lettuce", the CDC said.

The agency said 53 people in 16 states have become infected with E. coli from lettuce, 31 people have been hospitalized, including five people who have developed a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome, while no deaths have been reported. This includes whole heads and hearts of romaine, chopped romaine, and salads and salad mixes containing romaine lettuce.

The CDC advises individuals with symptoms of E. Coli infection to speak with their healthcare provider, make a list of the foods they consumed during the week before getting sick, report their illness to the health department, and answer health investigators' questions.

The CDC has expanded its warning. The bacteria can be spread by contaminated water, animal manure or in undercooked beef.
