  • Jason Witten retiring from Cowboys for ‘Monday Night Football

ESPN declined comment and has had no announcement to reveal its new Monday Night Football broadcast team. Owner Jerry Jones says Witten was taking the weekend to consider his future and hadn't made a decision. There are few players who could provide the excellence Witten supplied for 15 years.

The Dallas Cowboys tight end is considering retiring in order to become an analyst on ESPN's "Monday Night Football" broadcasts, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported Friday, citing team sources. James Hanna (knee) was placed on the reserve/retired list; the Cowboys still have Geoff Swaim, Blake Jarwin and Rico Gathers under contract. "We don't think we're going into a season without a good tight end".

Background from SportsDay contributor Dane Brugler's draft guide: A four-star tight end recruit out of high school, Dalton Schultz helped lead Bingham to an undefeated 2013 season (14-0) and 5A state title with 31 catches for 512 yards and nine touchdowns as a senior - high school teammates with Utah defensive tackle Lowell Lotulelei. He has spent his entire career with the Chargers, who signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2003.

Witten has appeared in every game since sitting out Week 5 of his rookie season. Yet, Witten remained among one of the greatest players, men, and leaders the National Football League has seen in its history. In 2012, he suffered a lacerated spleen in a preseason game against the Oakland Raiders but managed to get cleared medically hours before the regular-season opener against the Giants.

"Forget 110 catches [in 2012], forget [the] Pro Bowl, forget all that stuff". Day 2 of the NFL Draft?

"I've talked to Jason several times this week", Jones said. That's how you do it.

ESPN previously courted Peyton Manning for the gig, but he reportedly turned them down.

The Cowboys' all-time leader in receiving yards and receptions, who turns 36 next month, has seen a decrease in production in recent years.

In many ways the 11-time Pro Bowler is the face of the franchise and the leader in the locker room.
