  • DNC files lawsuit alleging Trump campaign, Russia conspired to influence 2016 election: Report

Us intelligence agencies suspect that the Kremlin intervened in the presidential election campaign in the United States to help Donald Trump win the election of 2016.

The Democratic National Committee filed the compensation suit with a federal court in NY on Friday.

"During the 2016 presidential campaign, Russian Federation launched an all-out assault on our democracy, and it found a willing and active partner in Donald Trump's campaign", DNC Chairman Tom Perez said.

While the President has denied he was in league with the Russians to increase his chances of winning, the DNC maintains it was an "act of treachery".

What do you think of the DNC lawsuit against Trump?

"This is a sham lawsuit about a bogus Russian collusion claim filed by a desperate, dysfunctional, and almost insolvent Democratic Party", he said.

In response, Trump's campaign said later on Friday that the lawsuit was "completely without merit and will be dismissed in due time". "With the Democrats' conspiracy theories against the President's campaign evaporating as quickly as the failing DNC's fundraising, they've sunk to a new low to raise money, especially among small donors who have abandoned them".

The suit filed Friday seeks millions of dollars in compensation to offset damage it claims the party suffered from the hacks.

The DNC is represented by the law firm Cohen-Milstein.

"WikiLeaks, I love WikiLeaks", the president said at a Florida rally on October 12, 2016. "And I'm not very supportive of it".

Mr Trump is yet to respond to the latest lawsuit.

Just before the Democratic National Convention in 2016, thousands of embarrassing emails were released that showed a preference for Hillary Clinton over Bernie Sanders. That litigation is still in progress.

The lawsuit does not name the president, but rather his son Donald Trump Jr. and his son-in-law Jared Kushner. Both are being investigated by Mueller, whose office declined to comment on the Democratic lawsuit.

The Democrats accused Trump's campaign of being "a racketeering enterprise" that worked with the Russians and WikiLeaks in a conspiracy that included hacking email servers at the DNC and leaking damaging information to the public.

Republican Party chair Ronna McDaniel called the lawsuit "a last-ditch effort by a bankrupt party still trying to cope with the fact that their candidate lost the 2016 election".

The Democrats sued Richard Nixon's Committee to Re-elect the President in 1973, following the break-in at the DNC's Watergate Hotel headquarters.
