"The Walking Dead" Season 8 finale rose week-to-week in the Nielsen ratings but still could not overcome the ratings declines that have plagued it for the past few seasons. The ending of the season premiere certainly set the Clark family (along with Strand and Luciana) up as antagonists to the newest members of Fear the Walking Dead, but there is little indication that they're playing The Whisperers, a group that disguises itself by wearing the skin of zombies. First, the season premiere in October, 2017 earned the lowest premiere ratings for the show since Season Three.

Granted in today's rating climate where decline is the norm for nearly everyone except Game of Thrones, the Season 8 finale results are a continuation of a trend that started in Season 6 for TWD, with the double killing Season 7 opener as a notable exception.

As much as ratings erosion is about as inevitable and inescapable as the Big Dirt Nap, fans of "The Walking Dead" have no reason to fear that it's in any danger of disappearing from AMC's schedule. Up 18% in total viewership from the April 8 penultimate "Worth" episode, TWD's Season 8 ender snared 4.4 million in the 18-49 demo it has so long dominated to hit a 3.4 rating.

Negan and his Saviors have troubled Rick Grimes & Co. since the sixth season, but the bat-swinging villain was brought to his knees in Sunday's episode, "Wrath". Over on FOX, The Last Man on Earth slipped to a 0.6 rating with 1.4 million total viewers while NBC's Timeless slipped to a 0.5 rating with 2.5 million total viewers. Debuting directly after the TWD Season 8 finale and facing the mega-hyped 20/20 sitdown with former Federal Bureau of Investigation boss James Comey on ABC, the Kim Dickens led Fear brought in 4.1 million viewers.
