  • North Koreans watch as their country's most famous newscaster announces leader Kim Jong-un's proposal to suspend nuclear tests

Politicians, defense professionals, and people around the world anxious that North Korea could, in fact, send missiles all the way across the Pacific Ocean and into the United States of America.

"We salute the declaration of president of the Workers" Party of Korea, Kim Jong-un, approved on April 20 through a decree of the plenary of the Central Committee of the WPK that the DPRK resigns to all nuclear and missile tests as of April 21', underlines a note of the Foreign Ministry.

"We urge the United States and South Korea to take adequate measures aimed at reducing military activities in the region and achieving mutually acceptable agreements with the DPRK at the upcoming inter-Korean and U.S. -DPRK summits", the statement said.

UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, said in a statement that the path was now open to a peaceful de-nuclearisation of the Peninsula following Kim's announcement that nuclear and missile tests were to end.

North Korea has worked for years to miniaturize a nuclear warhead so it can be fitted atop a long-range missile and survive the heat-intensive process of re-entering the Earth's atmosphere.

South Korean envoys have previously cited Kim as promising no more tests, but the recent news is the first such announcement directly by Pyongyang.

Kim's latest comments echoed those he made in a New Year's speech, in which he claimed the development of the state nuclear force had been completed.

This achievement, completely unverified by outside authorities, was the stated aim of North Korea's nuclear programme and explains Kim's reference to already have secured the "weaponization or nuclear weapons" [sic] in his comments on Friday.

"The precise language here is important", Narang continued. He then added: 'The northern nuclear test site has completed its mission'. "And missile tests could still be conducted under the guise of space launch vehicles", he said.

The announcement appears to signify a remarkable change in policy for Kim, following a relentless pursuit of nuclear and ballistic weapons as a means to ensure his regime's survival - although some analysts remain skeptical, pointing out that Kim hasn't tested a missile since November.

The new North Korean policy sets the table for further negotiations when the summits begin.

The leader of North Korea decided to make it public that his country wouldn't be involved in any further testing of nuclear capabilities just one week prior to a slated meetup between Kim Jong Un and Moon Jae-in, the President of South Korea.

Trump has tweeted, "This is very good news for North Korea and the World" and "big progress!" "Look forward to our Summit".

Japan - which has seen missiles fly over its territory - gave a mixed response, with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe offering a cautious welcome but his defence minister saying North Korea did not mention the short- or medium-range missiles that put Tokyo within reach.
