  • LeBron ties MJ's double-digit scoring streak

Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James (23) drives past Charlotte Hornets guard Kemba walker (15) during the first half at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte.

After breaking Jordan's mark, James was handed the ball and he received a standing ovation from the sellout Quicken Loans Arena crowd, which included pop superstar Justin Timberlake.

"I don't know. It's not like I set out to say I wanna become No. 1 in scoring 10-plus points, double digits for consecutive games or whatever and whatnot", he said.

James' numbers back up his claim, as he is now leading the league in minutes and among the top three in both points and assists despite a continually changing roster surrounding him. Jordan's streak lasted from March 22, 1986, when he scored eight points for the Chicago Bulls in a loss to the Cavs, until December 27, 2001, when he scored six points as a 38-year-old for the Washington Wizards in a game against the Indiana Pacers.

James kept up the scoring from there, totaling 35 points by the end of the third quarter, accounting for the 20th time in his career that he had scored 30 or more points against the Hornets, which tied Jordan in a separate record for the most 30-point games by a Hornets opponent.

James' streak began back on January 6, 2007 when he was just 23 years old and, according to ESPN, the three-time National Basketball Association champion has only fell short of reaching double digits in a game on eight occasions.

Jordan never finished a playoff game with fewer than 10 points.

Dwight Howard led the Hornets with 19 points and nine rebounds.

LeBron told reporters during shootaround on Friday that eclipsing Jordan's mark would be "incredible", though he acknowledged the specificity of the record.

"I think records are always meant to be broken", he said. And then I'm just going out and playing for the joy of the game.

The next-longest active streak belongs to James Harden, with 258 games.

James scored eight points in the space of two minutes down the stretch in the fourth quarter to put the Cavaliers in the driving seat.
