PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: The objective of our actions tonight is to establish a strong deterrent against the production, spread and use of chemical weapons.

Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the United Nations, warned Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Sunday that the USA would launch new missile strikes against his regime if he carries out another chemical weapons attack. The decision to launch the strikes came in response to new evidence that the Syrian dictator had killed civilians in an April 7 chemical attack.

One of the three sites hit was the Barzeh complex, which the U.S. says was a centre for development, production and testing of chemical and biological weapons, although Syria denies this.

The Shayrat Air Base was hit by 59 U.S. Tomahawk cruise missiles past year.

In a separate development, the White House yesterday appeared to row back from imminent Russian Federation sanctions announced at the weekend by Ms Haley.

Mr. Trump approved a hybrid plan that saw more than 100 advanced missiles fired at the three Syrian targets early Saturday.

Late on Friday night in Washington, President Donald Trump addressed the nation, revealing that he had authorised strikes in Syria with the United Kingdom and France.

Opposition sources say Dumair airport is a major air base used in a large-scale military campaign waged by the Syrian army with Russian firepower that regained eastern Ghouta, a rebel enclave on the outskirts of Damascus.

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson told the BBC he hopes there is no need for additional strikes against Syria, but that Britain and its allies will consider further action if Assad uses chemical weapons in the future.

At a Saturday press briefing, Gen. Kenneth F. McKenzie Jr. said, "None of our aircraft or missiles involved in this operation were successfully engaged by Syrian air defenses, and we have no indication that Russian air-defense systems were employed".

"We have not done this because President Trump asked us to do so", May said.

"When our president draws a red line, our president enforces the red line", Haley said at an emergency United Nations meeting called by Russian Federation.

It's consistently called for a peaceful resolution of the conflict. "And they will go directly to any sort of companies that were dealing with equipment related to Assad and chemical weapons used".

"We have seen as a pattern in the world today is actors who behave in a reprehensible manner, then can be quite clever in trying to muddy the waters and in trying to dodge responsibility", she added.

British Prime Minister Theresa May is set to face restive lawmakers on Monday to justify her decision to launch airstrikes against Syria without a vote in Parliament. She accused Syria, aided by Russian Federation, of trying to block an investigation into the gas attack by the global chemical weapons watchdog.

He and Nikki Haley, the US Ambassador to the United Nations, were said to have been pushing for a more robust strike.

Hassan Nasrallah said the strikes were "limited" and were a recognition of the strength of the "resistance axis" - referencing the alliance between Syria, Iran and Hezbollah.
