Minnesota Timberwolves: 3 takeaways from Game 3 vs. Rockets

  • Timberwolves Blast Rockets

The Houston Rockets had the best record in the National Basketball Association during the regular season and are the top seed in the West. Minnesota answered with a 121-105 home win in Game 3 Saturday night. The Rockets' three point shooting has been even worse as they are hitting a paltry 31.5 percent from beyond the arc: they hit 69.6 percent at the charity stripe.

Minnesota is 6-1 ATS in its last seven games. Harden was solid with 29 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, and Paul had 17 points and six assists, but the other three starters - Trevor Ariza, P.J. Tucker and Capela - totaled just 17 points.

The Timberwolves rank 17th in assists per game (22.7) while the Rockets rank 27th (21.4). In a Game 2 blowout loss in Houston on Wednesday night, the Wolves had only 15 assists and 16 turnovers while being held to 82 points.

The Wolves' 15 3-pointers on 55.6 percent shooting was an anomaly, so they'll likely have to figure out a way to beat the Rockets in Game 4 without an elite 3-point shooting performance.

Then, an unnessecary offensive foul by Taj Gibson in the open floor, and two mistakes from Andrew Wiggins, all before the first eight minutes of the game had gone by. Butler stayed in the game, but he did look a step slow to start the third quarter before really heating up later. That, along with a resurgence from Karl-Anthony Towns, helped Minnesota get a win and get back in the series.

The Timberwolves rank fourth in points in the paint per game (49.1) while the Rockets rank 28th (40.8).

The total has gone under in six of Houston's last seven games. He hopes the team can get back to playing the way they did in the majority of the regular season here to head home up 3-1 in the series. It's unlikely that Minnesota will shoot as well from the perimeter as they did in Game 3.

The Houston Rockets have a chance to take a commanding 3-1 lead over the Timberwolves on Monday. Now, it's the Timberwolves who have all the momentum as their role players stepped up big in the pivotal Game 3 victory, so it'll be interesting to see if they can earn another win against the Rockets who have won 20 of the last 23 meetings.
