Swachhagrahis, or Ambassadors of Cleanliness, are often known as "foot soldiers", who motivate people in villages to implement the Community Approaches to Sanitation (CAS).

Mahatma Gandhi launched the Champaran Satyagrah on April 10, 1917, against the British to fight for rights of farmers who were forced to undertake indigo cultivation.

Hitting out at the former government led by the Congress for delaying projects, the prime minister said his administration was completing all its commitments with the co-operation of the people.

Praising the enthusiasm of the assembled "Clean India" volunteers, Modi said, "Bihar has shown the path to the country during the last three hundred years of India's three major criterion".

The PM pledged to fulfil the sanitation dream of the Father of the Nation and make banks of the Ganga open-defecation free.

Stressing on respect for all, irrespective of caste and religion, Bihar chief minister Kumar said the country would not progress amid tension and confrontation, but did not elaborate.

"But I will laud Nitish ji for his patience and good governance and the way he is fighting anti-social elements, it is not easy", he said. "In the last one week, the state government constructed more than 8,50,000 toilets in Bihar. I believe even CM Bihar won't agree on such false claims", Tejashwi Yadav tweeted. They feel if the poor are strengthened, then they (opposition) will not be able to speak lies.

Apart from campaigns related to Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, the prime minister will also flag off new initiatives of railways, petroleum and natural gas, and road transport and highways ministries, among others.

Listing the benefits of toilet, Modi said the surveys have suggested that a toilet in a house saves an average of Rs 50,000 annually which were being used on treatment of various diseases, the cases of diarrhoea come down and also there is betterment of education to children as they don't need sick leaves which they used to take due to illness.

The Bihar government had in April 2017 launched year-long celebrations to mark the centenary of Champaran Satyagraha movement of Mahatma Gandhi.

He also symbolically flagged off, using a remote device, a 12000 HP freight electric locomotive and the Champaran-Humsafar Express train from Katihar to Delhi.
