Natalie Portman Will Not Accept An Award In Israel Citing Recent Events

  • Natalie Portman backs out of trip to Israel over regional tensions

Portman was to have received the award in Israel in June, but told the Genesis Prize Foundation through a representative that she would "not feel comfortable participating in any public events in Israel". The recent events in question are most certainly the protests on the Israel-Gaza border, which, in the past three weeks, has seen more than 35 Palestinians killed by Israeli forces. According to The New York Times, the Genesis Prize Foundation had meant to honor the actress and her achievements, but has since canceled the event. "I chose not to attend because I did not want to appear as endorsing Benjamin Netanyahu, who was to be giving a speech at the ceremony", she wrote.

Hazan added: "Sweetness can come from strength: I call on Interior Minister Aryeh Deri (Shas) to rescind Portman's Israeli citizenship".

Portman has previously joined efforts to support Israel.

Just an anti-thesis to what some of the Bollywood actors including Amitabh Bachan did with Israeli PM Netanyahu, Popular Jewish Hollywood star Natalie Portman has made a decision to pull out of a prestigious award ceremony reportedly in protest against Netanyahu government.

Recipients contribute their winnings to causes of their choice, and Portman has said she meant to dedicate the money to programmes advancing women's equality. 'The staff of the Foundation. respects her right to publicly disagree with the policies of the government of Israel. "We, who have such a history with antisemitism, should understand the danger of racism and of how we treat minorities, and I felt that his comments were very much not showing a Jewish spirit of equality and dignity and peace", said Portman.

Natalie Portman is facing criticism from Israeli government officials for cancelling her trip to the country to collect the 2018 Genesis Prize.

"I treasure my Israeli friends and family, Israeli food, books, art, cinema, and dance", she said.

The daily protests, dubbed "The Great March of Return", began on March 30 along the Israel-Gaza frontier, reviving a longstanding demand for the right of return of Palestinian refugees to towns and villages from which their families fled or were driven out when the state of Israel was created.

They went on to say that they feared Portman's decision would "cause our philanthropic initiative to be politicised".

The prize "honors individuals who have attained excellence and worldwide renown in their chosen professional fields, and who inspire others through their engagement and dedication to the Jewish community and/or the State of Israel".

Previous Genesis Prize recipients include former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, actor Michael Douglas, violinist Itzhak Perlman and sculptor Anish Kapoor.

Miri Regev, the Israeli culture minister, referring to the Palestinian-led "Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign" (BDS), claimed she had "fallen like ripe fruit into the hands of BDS supporters". Portman has been critical of her birth country's behavior in the past, stating she was "very, very upset and disappointed" over Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu's re-election in 2015.
